Last week, I traveled to Chicago for a Naturopathic Conference for continuing education, hosted by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP)
It was great to see my colleagues, naturopathic friends from Peru, and friends from my high school in Chicago.
I came back with a lot of great tools, leaving me feeling motivated and inspired to enhance my support and assistance on your healing journey.
Here are some key takeaways:
(Evidence to support what we may already know.)
1. Community support is essential on the healing journey. Supporting each other helps us succeed. However, some communities may hinder healing, so it’s important to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy communities.
2. Emerging research highlights the health benefits of seasonal and local eating. Seasonal eating is traditionally recommended by Ayurvedic medicine, a 5,000-year-old medical system.
3. Poor vagus nerve communication may prevent improvements in immune function, a concept known as psycho-neuro-immunology or mind-body medicine. Relaxation can enhance this communication. The vagus nerve is the body’s main communication highway, carrying signals between the brain and the rest of the body.
Stressed out mind may hurt the immune system!
4. For anyone healing from traumatic past events, it’s crucial that they remain in control of their healing journey, not the doctor, therapist, family, partner, friends, or even children. Empowering individuals to heal at their own pace is vital.
5. Delayed food sensitivities (as opposed to immediate allergic reactions) can lead to inflammation in the nervous system and brain, impairing cognitive function in individuals with mental health disorders.
